About The Department

The history of the department dates back to 1947, when the college came to begin on 11th August 1947. The course of study was only at the intermediate level and affiliated to the Madras University. Commerce was offered as a course of study during the academic year of 1951-52 by the then Travancore University. The College was granted affiliation by the Kerala University in 1957. During the year 1956-57, the intermediate course was replaced by the pre-university course. In 1963, the college was affiliated to the University of Calicut and the pre- university course was replaced by the pre-degree course in 1964. The last batch of PDC students turned out in 2003-04, with the de-linking of the Pre – Degree course from colleges to Higher Secondary School Level. Post Graduate Course in Commerce was sanctioned by the University Of Calicut in 1971 and the M.Com Course was introduced in the College in 1971-72.

The department has a glorious past spanning over a period of 75years and is one of the oldest commerce departments functioning in Kerala. At present, the department offers Six Semester Degree Course with intake of 60 students. The elective subject offered at the degree level since its inception is Co-operation. At the post graduate level 20 students are being admitted. The elective subject offered at PG level is Financial Management. The staff strength of the department was at all-time height of 14 when the shift system was introduced and got reduced to 9 with the de-linking of the Pre-Degree Courses and to 7 with lifting PG weightage in 2020.

The commerce department was originally housed in the main block and the old commerce block. A computer lab attached to the department started functioning in the year 1995 with a formal inauguration by Dr. Mannikkan, Professor and Head of the Department of Commerce, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. The department was shifted to the present building in 1995 and the new block houses, the staff room, B.Com classes, computer lab and the department library. The M.Com classes are housed in History Block. The library has a fine collection of classic books (4500+) , and is referred to both by the students and staff in a great measure. There had drastic shift in the availability of physical and academic facilities since its inception to present. The commerce department of the Government College has attained its present status due to concrete efforts and leadership and guidance provided by the eminent teachers who headed the department since its inception.
