Department of Tamil is an old and one among the prestigious departments in Govt college Chittur. UG, PG , MPhil and Research (Ph.D) courses in the department, Tamil is an optional subject for BA degree courses and the additional languages for intermediate course started functioning in the year 1947, the year in which the college was established. The first post graduate course in Tamil Language and Literature of the college was introduced in 1969-70.

The department was further honoured by the University of Calicut by raising it to a Research Centre for Higher Studies in Tamil, leading to Ph.D. Our department is the first research department in this college and it is the one and only research and higher studies centre for Tamil under the University .of Calicut. Jesudasan, Karllose Tamilavan, Dr.Lokhambal, Dr.Geetha , Dr.C. Govindan , Dr.Mahalingam, Dr.Rajaram,  Dr.Karuppusamy, were  the eminent Personalities working in our department. Tamil scholars like A.K.Permal, Rajamarthandan, Vedha sahaya kumar are the popular alumni of this  department .

The Research Centre was started in this department as per the university order number 24229/72/ GA (CL) Dt. 14.02.1976.At first five scholars registered their names for doing research leading to Ph.D. under the guidance of Dr. A. Subramaniapiliai, the professor and Head of the Department of Tamil. Continuously  Dr. T.E. Gnanamoorthy , Dr. C. Govindan , Dr. S. Murugan, Dr. S. Logambal,  Dr. A. Sivasubramanian, Dr. N. Gnanapalam were the research guides of this centre,  At present, Dr. G Muthulakshmi, Dr P. Murugan, Dr. K Sivamani , Dr. N. Manoharan, Dr. T. Kavitha, Dr. A. Vijayan , Dr.V.Ravi ,Dr.S.Fathima ,Dr.G.Kathiravan ,Dr.R.Rathi  ,Dr .V Dharmalingam are registered as research guides and guide the scholars . Other one   faculty doing Ph.D. as part time. As a research department for 48 years of higher academic  service, we produced  37 Ph.D, Awards .. Now 26 Scholars are doing Ph.D. (23 FT and 3 PT) in our department. We have well equipped research library, It has more than 25,000 books in which 50% belongs to classical and rare categories and reference books. All the necessary Infrastructural facilities including classrooms, Library, Internet connections, Smart rooms, LCD, DLP etc are available in the Department.

Most of our PG students have qualified UGC-NET Examination, got Lectureship and Junior Research Fellowship last few years. The Academic year 2019-2020 a new course M.Phil  was Sanctioned in our department. Eight  Scholars  Completed the Course .
