The Library was established in 1947 and now functions in a newly constructed two storied building situated in the center of the campus.  It has a collection of more than one lakh three thousand and five hundred books which are hosted in the Central Library and Department Libraries.  We subscribe 8 printed journals, 20 popular magazines and 10 Newspapers.  The resources of the library include books, journals, magazines, newspapers, e-books, e-journals, previous year’s exam question papers etc.  We have special collection of books to help the students to prepare the competitive examinations.  The library resources support the learning, teaching, and research activities of the members of the library. The college library is an institutional member of National Digital Library of India (NDLI) and subscribes online resources through INFLIBNET N-List which enables us to access e-books and e-journals.  We follow open access system which allows users to select any book that the person wishes to borrow.  The Library is automated with open source library management software, KOHA and RFID technology.  Books are classified and arranged as per Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system and online public access catalogue (OPAC) is provided to the users to locate the documents. Plagiarism checking services are available in the library.  The Central Library is open on all working days from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm.

CENTRAL LIBRARY AND LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE


The Government College Chittur Library system consists of a Central Library and 17 departmental libraries that collectively support the teaching, learning, research, and extension programs of the college. The library aims to provide comfortable, efficient, and friendly support to all members of the college, positioning itself as a dynamic resource for professional assistance in academic activities. With over 104,600 books hosted in the central and department libraries, the collection is complemented by subscriptions to 21 journals, 17 popular magazines, and 5 newspapers. The library also subscribes to “National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N-LIST)” from INFLIBNET, allowing authorized users to access e-resources. Since 2012, the library has been automated using the Open Source Library Management software KOHA and proactive services with RFID technology.

LIBRARY WORKING HOURS

The Central Library is open on all working days from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm and remains closed on public holidays.

MEMBERSHIP

Students, teachers, and other college staff members are entitled to become library members. They can borrow books from the general section for home reading. The borrowing limits for different categories are as follows:

v  Undergraduate Students: 3 Books for 14 Days

v  Postgraduate Students: 3 Books for 14 Days

v  Research Scholars: 3 Books for 14 Days

v  Teaching Staff: 5 Books for 14 Days

v  Non-Teaching Staff: 2 Books for 14 Days

THE REFERENCE SECTION

The reference section comprises books designated for reference and consultation only, such as dictionaries, encyclopaedias, etc. These books can be obtained from the librarian between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm on all working days and are not issued unless there is special sanction from the librarian.

LIBRARY RULES

Ø  Library members must produce their college ID card when visiting the library.

Ø  Visitors are requested to sign in the In/Out system as evidence of their prestigious visit to the library. This action is a token of respect to the reading materials and helps prepare user statistics for the library’s development.

Ø  Readers should keep all personal belongings (bags, umbrellas, own books, etc.) in the property counter before entering the library. They are permitted to bring loose paper and writing pads inside.

Ø  The usage of mobile phones is not permitted inside the library.

Ø  Sleeping, eating, and talking loudly are strictly prohibited in the library.

Ø  Library membership (Borrower’s ticket) cards are non-transferable.

Ø  Documents taken off the shelves must be kept on the table. Replacing documents on shelves by users is not encouraged as it may lead to misplacement.

Ø  Books are issued to students and faculty for a period of 14 days and can be renewed twice if the book is not in demand.

Ø  All books must be returned on or before the due date, and books returned after the due date will be charged an overdue fee of Rs. 1.00 per day.

Ø  Patrons must ensure the condition of the books they intend to borrow. Damaged and mutilated books will not be accepted and must be replaced.

Ø  Loss of a book by the borrower should be reported to the circulation counter immediately to avoid fines and must be replaced with the latest edition or remitted as per government norms.

Ø  Marking, underlining, scribing, folding, and tearing of pages or any type of mutilation of documents are strictly prohibited and will be severely dealt with.

Ø  All members should return the books borrowed from the library or pay any outstanding dues before obtaining a ‘No Due’ certificate from the library.

Kerala Piravi

The Central Library celebrated ‘Kerala Piravi’ by organizing a delighting book display from November 1st to 10th 2023.  This event aimed to raise awareness among college students about the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.  The display primarily featured a diverse collection of Malayalam language and Kerala historical books, offering a comprehensive view of the state’s vibrant literary and historical landscape.  The initiative was not limited to college students alone; it also extended its reach to include students from the government Victoria Higher Secondary School.  This inclusive approach fostered a sense of community engagement and knowledge-sharing beyond the campus walls.  Through this initiative, the library played a pivotal role in promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of Kerala’s rich heritage, fostering a sense of pride and connection among students. The positive response and participation from both college and secondary school students highlighted the success of the program in achieving its goal of spreading awareness and cultivating an interest in the cultural and historical aspects of Kerala.

 

Library orientation 2023

On October 3, 2023, the Central Library organized an orientation and information literacy program for fresher’s in MG Hall, in two sessions.  A total of 166 students actively participated in both sessions.  The program aimed to familiarise students with different types of libraries, educate them on the effective utilization of library catalogues and enlightened on accessing digital resources through the National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N-LIST).  Participants were familiarised with various search tools, equipping them with essential skills for effective information retrieval, N-List resources.  Additionally, the program highlighted important library rules to ensure a conducive learning environment.  Furthermore, students were informed about available MOOC courses- SWAYAM, NTPEL  encouraging them to explore and enhance their knowledge.

India@75 photograph’s exhibition

On September 13, 2023 a remarkable historical exhibition titled ‘India at 75: a Visual Journery through Time’ was organized by the collaboration of History Department and Central Library at the College Library.  The exhibition featured an extensive collection of captivating photographs, chronicling India’s journey through the ages.  These images were made available courtesy of Malayala Manorama, under the title “India @75 Kadha ithuvare”. The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of the college principal, Dr. Reji T, who inaugurated the event.  Ms.Sheeba S, HOD History Department took on the role of presidential address, adding a distinguished touch to the occasion.  The event provided a unique and enlightening opportunity for the college community to take avisual voyage through India’s rich history as it celebrated the nation’s 75 years of independence. The event attracted students and teachers from various departments of the college, fostering a significant turnout and interest in India’s rich historical heritage. It provided an invaluable opportunity for the attendees to explore and appreciate the nation’s multifaceted history through the lens of photography.  Dr. M Vasishtt, the former Head of History Dept, Malabar Christian College, played a pivotal role in spearheading this educational initiative within the higher education institutions.

Literary competition 2023

During the “Onam” celebrations, the central library in collaboration with the vayanavismayam Readers Club, organized poetry and story writing competitions for college students, named ‘Palakkadan Gramabhangiyum Onavum’.  In the poetry writing competition, Meenakshi C. from the Geography department secured the first prize, while Kavya Kumaresh from the Botany department earned the second prize.  In the story writing category, Nikhita S and Shikha S, both from the Malayalam department, settled the first and second prizes.  The event showcased the literary talents of these college students and added a creative touch to the Onam celebrations.

Leo Tolstoy

Central Library and Learning Resource centre organized a book display in commemoration of the 195th birth anniversary of the renowned Russian author, Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910). The event aimed to pay tribute to the literary genius who authored some of the most iconic novels in world literature. The book display showcased a collection of Tolstoy’s works, including his famous novels, essays, and critical writings.  The primary objective of the book display was to create awareness among students and visitors about the life and literary contributions of Leo Tolstoy. Additionally, it sought to encourage readers to explore Tolstoy’s works and understand their enduring relevance in today’s world. The library curated a comprehensive collection of Leo Tolstoy’s works, which included his most famous novels such as “War and Peace,” “Anna Karenina,” and “Resurrection.” It also featured his essays, short stories, and philosophical writings.  The Leo Tolstoy book display at College Library served a valuable educational and cultural event. It not only honoured the literary legacy of this great author but also encouraged readers to discover the richness of his literature.

Teacher’s day

Central Library commemorated Teachers’ Day with a thoughtful tribute to Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the former President of India, on his remembrance day. The library organized a special display of books authored by Dr. Radhakrishnan, celebrating his profound contributions to philosophy and education. This initiative served as a fitting homage to his legacy as an eminent teacher and statesman.
In addition to showcasing Dr. Radhakrishnan’s works, the library also created a captivating wall magazine adorned with small cards featuring teachers’ favourite books. This innovative display allowed students and faculty to gain insights into the literary preferences of their educators, fostering a deeper connection between teachers and students.
The celebration was a meaningful reminder of the importance of education and the vital role teachers play in shaping the future. It encouraged a sense of appreciation for the knowledge imparted by educators and emphasized the library’s role as a hub for learning and inspiration. The event was well-received, serving as a beautiful tribute to both Dr. S. Radhakrishnan and the dedicated educators who carry forward his legacy in the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment.

Book exhibition – Paulo Coelho

To make an awareness of Paulo Coelho book collection in the Central Library and improve reading habits among college students,   Library   conducted an exhibition from August 23rd to September 4th. The exhibition showcased a wide range of Coelho’s books, including his most popular novels such as The Alchemist and Eleven Minutes. The exhibition also featured information about Coelho’s life and work, as well as a selection of critical essays. The exhibition was a success, attracting a large number of students and visitors. It helped to increase awareness of the library’s Coelho collection and encouraged students to read more of his books.

  Central Library -MilanKundera – Book exhibition

Central Library paid tribute to the literary giant Milan Kundera by organizing a special exhibition of his collection, following his passing on July 13, 2023.  The exhibition showcased an impressive array of Kundera’s works, including his iconic novels like “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” and “The Book of Laughter and Forgetting”.  It offered students and literary enthusiasts a unique opportunity to delve into the profound world of Kundera’s literary genius.  The event also featured discussions and reflections on Kundera’s impact on contemporary literature and his enduring legacy.  This heartfelt gesture by the library allowed the community to come together to remember and celebrate the contributions of this exceptional author.

 

Book exhibition –  Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam

The Central Library organized a week-long book exhibition from August 17-24, 2023, in celebration of the birth anniversary of  Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, renowned scientist and former President of India.  This exhibition aimed to pay tribute to Dr. Kalam’s extraordinary contributions and inspire college students with his life and work by showcasing a selection of his famous books The exhibition featured a wide array of books written by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, with a particular focus on those that catered to the interests and educational needs of college students. Some of the notable titles on display included: “Wings of Fire” – Dr. Kalam’s autobiography, which recounts his journey from humble beginnings to becoming a space scientist, “Ignited Minds” – A book that encourages young minds to dream big and work towards the development of India, “My Journey: Transforming Dreams into Actions” – Dr. Kalam’s reflections on leadership, innovation, and nation-building, “India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium” – Outlining his vision for India’s growth and development etc…

The book exhibition in honour of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s birthday was a resounding success. It not only celebrated the life and achievements of a great visionary but also encouraged college students to aspire to greatness and contribute to the progress of the nation. The Central Library looks forward to organizing more such events that promote the joy of reading and the spirit of innovation among students.
